Sports ministry seeks big budget

KATHMANDU, JUN 15 -

Ministry for Youth and Sports has proposed Rs 1.26 billion budget for the fiscal year 2013/2014. This is almost the double amount from the last fiscal year.
The ministry has demanded additional amount of Rs 300 million on top of ceiling budget allocated by National Planning Commission.
Ministry’s budget for the fiscal year 2012/ 13 is 660 million.
Secretary at the ministry Hari Prasad Nepal said that out of the total budget around 1.2 million has been allocated for National Sports Council. Likewise, around 100 million has been set aside for the programmes run by the ministry like President Running Shield, school level coaches training and seminars.
According to Nepal, the ministry has not come up with any new programmes as it aims to spend the bulk of the budget in completing the infrastructure that had begin last year and also add a few more covered halls across the country.
“Our focus is on infrastructure as we plan to upgrade with Mulpani Cricket Ground and Dashrath Stadium in the top priority list,” Nepal said.
He also revealed that the ministry is planning to build at least one covered hall in all 75 districts. ‘We have found that there are currently 25 districts that do not have a single covered hall.
We cannot build all of them in a year so we have decided to work on building 15 covered halls in coming fiscal year and start construction in other districts next year.”
Upgrading facilities at Satdobato complex and the Dashrath stadium in Tripureshwor are other programmes.
“At the Dashrath stadium we plan to install artificial turf and also upgrade the tracks,” secretary Nepal said.
Cricket too has gained priority after the senior team’s triumph in the ICC World Cricket League Division 3 in Bermuda and the ACC Tweny20 which has left Nepal only a step away from playing in the World Cup in shortest version of the game and the 50-overs format.
“As for cricket we have included the five cricket grounds including Tribhuvan University, Mulpani, Pokhara, Birgunj and Biratnagar with the aim of establishing the Mulpani ground as an international standard academy,” he informed.
According to the chief of the finance department at NSC Basu Acharya, Rs 35 million has been set aside to complete the Mulpani Ground which includes completing the ground work and building the parapet. As for football Rs 55 million has been allocated to maintain the Dashrath stadium.
Acharya also said that around Rs 150,000 has been allocated for special games.
The ministry has also increased the number of games in the President’s Running Shield. Until this year athletics and volleyball were the only games included.
From next year it plans to add cricket, football, karate, taekwondo and wushu.
According to Finance Ministry, National Planning Commission has given total budget ceiling capacity of Rs 506 billion but the demand from different ministries is around Rs 750 billion.
